Advancing your Practice: Cuba Ex/change is a travel abroad program that offers students the opportunity to engage with a unique locale, question/challenge its presumed status quo, and formulate ideas that address possibility and opportunity in the context of imminent change. Students travel to Havana to spend 11 days exploring, documenting, observing, and collaborating with local students and professionals.

Upon arrival in Havana, US students are paired with a Cuban design or art student or a young professional/recent graduate with whom they will collaborate, share ideas, and develop a project with.

During the first 5 days each US/Cuba student team observes, explores, analyses, and documents their experiences together while participating in a series of organized lectures, studio visits, site visits, workshops, and group gatherings and dinners. The group will visit a silkscreen and letterpress studio, a publishing house, several cultural institutions and museums; meet with prominent designers; visit historical design archives, educational institutions, and architectural landmarks; and participate in hands-on workshops.

During the last 5 days each US/Cuba student team responds to their experiences and observations by developing a project. They work in a workshop environment (either in a large classroom(s) or room) to conceptualize, produce, and complete their project. Each team’s project is idea driven and develops from an observed need or a current urgent issue in contemporary Cuba. Each project’s physical outcome is displayed in an exhibition taking place on the last day of the program.
