Program Description:
New York City has been the international center for visual culture since the 1960s...and continues to be a hub for contemporary visual art and design. Leveraging this rich history and current position, students will engage with a art and design world that exists in a very different, but parallel environment to that which they encounter in Los Angeles. Having exposure to and an insiders understanding to the different ways of working and other ideas about the field of design will give designers a larger theoretical and practical toolbox with which to approach their own practices as they move forward in shaping their design futures.

In New York we will visit some of the most important major visual culture institutions in the world as well as some more underground / alternative initiatives. Students will recognize workshop leaders and studio visits from their contemporary design history education. We will soak in not only design and art culture but the general cultural landscape of NYC - which is unparalleled worldwide. Part of the learning goals of the trip will be to actively work on methods of integrating the experiences into one's own practice and ideas.
