Program Description:
Washington, D.C.

This course provides a look at the African American experience through a different lens and provides a critical and contextualized chronological survey of African American history and culture. We will examine how the community responded to and was affected by the political, cultural, and social changes over time. Students will explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture at the National Mall in Washington D.C. Additional activities are planned to enhance the experience, while allowing time for you to explore on your own. The exhibitions, at the museum, move from "Slavery and Freedom" to "A Changing America." Students will learn about the development of the culture by use of readings, visual artifacts, media and personal accounts from early culture to the 21st century.
